Writer Challenges (Writing Prompts)
2 Morning Pages
Daily life bogs us down, our minds constantly on the go and moving towards the next thing. Full of worries, doubts, need to do’s and more.
The morning pages were introduced by Julia Cameron in 1992. A guide for everyday people who were looking to be more creative. Its discusses much more than morning pages. Check out the link to find out.
This is an exercise you can do each morning, hence the name. What you’ll need is a notebook of choice and a comfortable pen. Something that glides instead of inhibiting your writing, got a favourite pen? Perfect!
Morning pages consists of writing 3 full pages of longhand. That’s a lot. However, the topic of your writing is already chosen. What you scribble is a stream of consciousness. This means everything on your mind.
“If you can’t think of anything to write, then write, ‘I can’t think of anything to write…’
Julia Cameron
Why does it work?
Cameron believes that by writing everything on your mind the moment you awake, it will make your life better. The stream of consciousness will aid you in finding solutions to your problems, from life to relationships.
She states that the morning pages help us get to the other side. The other side of our fears, negativity and moods.
Many people swear by it.
A routine can help you have a sense of normalcy. In uncertain times like these, adding a routine for your current quarantined can give you back some control.
3 Write In A Different Perspective
Have you ever wondered what a story would be like from another POV?
In this exercise, you can take stories from books, movies, series etc. While you know the plot, the story becomes vastly dissimilar through another’s eyes. What happens when this character out of the storyline for a while, suddenly coming back with new information. How did they get this? What happens to this character when the spotlight is not on them?
Now you’ll have the chance to create interesting scenarios that leads to the plot. Something completely separate occurs than what is depicted in the original story OR untold becomes the centre of your writing.
On the other hand, you don’t need to stick with stories someone else has told, what about your own? What about your lived experience?
There’s so much material there to devour and transform! Try your own Swapping POV challenge.
How are these working out for you? Would you like more? Let me know in the comments. Until then
