Trepidation And Fearfulness. You type a semicolon and stare at it; wondering if that is where it belongs.
Here and here you place it. Swifty smothered in the curers deletion.

After a long pause, the jury finally reached their verdict: guilty.
The shopping list includes: pasta, tomatoes, cheese, garlic and parsley.

Life’s too short for counting calories.

You know the definitions – but that is not the hard part.
Use tools like Grammarly to help you with this process but also spelling, tone of writing and more.
Telling The Difference – When Should I Use What?
When should I use a semicolon? No longer fear it with these 6 rules.
1 Used As A Connector Of Related Independent Clauses
In most cases, a semicolon is used to link two independent clauses that are related. Related meaning similar ideas. These ideas in a sentence are equal in their rank. Both independent, the ideas being understandable if single sentences.
Walking toward the tree; I see a familiar face.
2 Avoid Using Comma When A Semicolon Is Needed
Remember what a semicolons job is? To fit in between two related (similar in ideas) parts of a sentence.
The dog is white, it is also old. X
The dog is white; it is also old. /
3 Avoid Using Semicolon When A Comma Is Needed
Unless the dog moves; I can’t leave. X
Unless the dog moves, I can’t leave. /
There is no independent clause (stand-alone sentences); no need for a semicolon. Both can be described as subordinate clauses that need each other to make sense.
4 Replaces Conjunctions
When you want to introduce a semicolon into your writing, think about what you already have and how it will fit. For example, you are proofreading your story, and come across a sentence you feel is perfect for a semicolon. There lies a conjunction instead.
I fell head over heels for him; but it was not a wise decision. /
Furthermore, you can replace the correct grammar use of “, conjunction” with “;”.
I fell head over heels for him, and it was not a wise decision. / Correct but can be replaced
I fell head over heels for him; it was not a wise decision. /
5 When A List Has Items That Contain Commas
There are two ways to write: with paper and chosen ink or lead, which is cost-effective and accessible; or my computer, which is more expensive yet fast and tidy.
6 Avoid Using Semicolons When Colons Are Needed
Colons introduce lists and emphasize a word or phrase.
Shakespeare once said; “To thine own self; be true”. X
Shakespeare once said: “To thine own self: be true”. /
Although semicolons join two non-independent (and or dependant) parts in a sentence, this is a quote, which comes under the phrase umbrella. Therefore, colons are suited.

I love this! I think alot of people misuse semi colons. Great tips!
Thank you 😊 Hope it helps you too.
Yes!! I loved this post! I find I write with a lot of related thoughts and put a comma between when in face it should be a semi-colon (unless I add the word and). Since I started blogging I’ve been really pinpointing this error in my writing and trying to improve. Thank you, I needed this.
You’re welcome! I’m glad you’ve found time to improve your blogging skills 😊
